How much does an AI consultant cost?
I can't give you an honest single number, and I won't quote a market rate I can't source. What I can tell you is how the price gets set. At Wright Advisors it depends on the shape of the work, which is a fractional retainer, a fixed-scope AI or product build, or a strategy sprint. I don't publish pricing.
If you've searched for AI consultant hourly rates for 2025 or 2026, or looked at pricing on directory listings, you've seen a lot of ranges. I haven't pulled a source I'd stand behind for those, so I'm not going to repeat figures here. A range from a directory tells you what other people charge for work that may look nothing like yours. It won't tell you what your project costs.
Hourly rates are also a weak way to compare AI help. The hour isn't the thing you're buying. You're buying a working system, or a decision, or someone to run a function while you figure out what you need. Two people at the same hourly rate can deliver very different things, and the one who is slower per hour but ships can be cheaper in the end.
When you compare quotes, I'd press on scope, and that goes for me too. Find out what exactly gets delivered. Find out who builds it, whether that's the person you're talking to or a subcontractor. I build my own work and don't subcontract it. I'm also not a staffing agency or a marketplace, so nobody sits between you and the person doing the work. Who runs the thing after it's built is the other question people skip.
AI work is hard to scope, and I'll say so. The tool is rarely the hard part. The hard part is the process around it, and you often can't see how messy that is until someone looks. That's why I'd rather talk before putting a price on anything. A fixed-scope build only works if the scope is real, and a retainer only makes sense if you need ongoing operational leadership. A strategy sprint fits when you need a plan before you spend on either.
I'm a fractional operations leader who also builds AI systems and automation, so you don't need one person for the operations and another for the build. You can read more about how I work on the fractional COO and AI consulting page.
The next step is small. It starts with a 30-minute call. Tell me what you're trying to do, and I'll tell you which of those shapes fits. If none of them do, I'll say that straight too.
